\u00a0 Nurses\u00a0have the ability to\u00a0engage in policy formations\u00a0for the\u00a0well-being\u00a0of our patients. There are\u00a0several\u00a0ways that nurses can choose to\u00a0influence or become\u00a0involved in policy making\u00a0that can reap benefits for patients and\u00a0as well as\u00a0nurses.\u00a0Levine (2020) states that the\u00a0Institute\u00a0of Medicine recommends\u00a0that nurses\u00a0further their practice by\u00a0committing\u00a0to continues education throughout their career and taking on\u00a0leadership roles to help guide and advance healthcare and the nursing profession.\u00a0<\/p>\n Professional organizations provide RNs an APRNs the\u00a0opportunity to\u00a0take part and participate in policy review.\u00a0Typically,\u00a0professional\u00a0organizations\u00a0involved in nursing advocacy also participates in issues involving nursing and healthcare at local levels all the way up the ladder to global levels.\u00a0A professional\u00a0organization\u00a0provides nurses with a network where they can be heard by voting,\u00a0discussing, and influence change on\u00a0certain\u00a0issues (Echevarria, 2018).\u00a0Members can become directly involved via voting or survey response (Echevarria, 2018). A second was nurses can play an active role in policy review\u00a0is to collect data and provide feedback to policy\u00a0makers or\u00a0other leaders on\u00a0whether\u00a0new policies being implemented are effective (Milstead & Short, 2019).\u00a0Information such as this can be gathered though quality improvement projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n Challenges may arise when nurses choose to play an active role in policy-review.\u00a0They may feel inadequately prepared or educated in participating and may even have other challenges arise when other team members are uninterested in participating. Insufficient data collection would also\u00a0cause issues\u00a0to arise when trying to implement change. When\u00a0any change challenges can and should be anticipated at some point. Milstead and Short (2019) states that some challenges can be eliminated or reduced by appointing a leader that is responsible for\u00a0discovering\u00a0resources and collecting data.\u00a0<\/p>\n A\u00a0nursing leader can be a positive role model by actively participating in\u00a0policy\u00a0review and\u00a0encouraging\u00a0other nurses to make a difference\u00a0through word of mouth or providing education to empower other nurses.\u00a0Nurses\u00a0comprise a huge part of the healthcare system and we play an\u00a0important\u00a0role, as\u00a0most of\u00a0our time is spent with patients we know and understand the\u00a0specific needs of our patient population.
