1. The fossils of some extinct creatures bore striking similarities to creatures still living. For example, the glyphodont and the armadillo (from his fossil collection the head of the giant Toxodon and the small Capyvara) had a striking similarity. Could they be related?
2. How would a longer life span of the Earth account for this?
3. In each case, the living animal was much smaller. Is it significant that the larger creatures indicated in the fossil records are extinct?
4. Drawing on what Darwin knew, explain the similarities. Could climate change account for the survival of smaller species and not larger? Why or Why not?
5. Reflect on our voyage. Has learning the steps of the Beagle’s voyage enhanced your appreciation of the development of Darwin’s theory? Has it helped you better understand how Darwin arrived at his conclusions?
