Paper 1 – Creating a Meal Plan for an active exercising person

The needs of athletes and highly active adults are often different from the needs of the general population. Nutritional goals are different, for example many active people focus on performance and recovery rather than general health when it comes to their overall diets. One example of differentiation is the RDA for sodium. The recommendation for the general population is to minimize sodium intake. But for athletes, who lose large amounts of sodium in sweat, sodium can play an important role.

Within this paper you will explore in detail and create a 7-day meal plan for an active adult or athlete. I will and you can refer to the exerciser as your “client” if you wish.

STEP 1

Who is your meal plan for?

v You must describe your client.

vAge, height, weight, BMI, caloric needs (minimum nutrients to cover are carbs, protein, fat, fiber, and sodium), activity level and caloric expenditure

vNext what are your client’s goals?

vLose overall weight, gain weight, and maintain weight. This is important because you will have a meal plan that correlates with these goals.

vEX – a meal plan for 2000 calorie a day sedentary person wishing to lose weight will take into consideration how many calorie’s this person burns during exercise and use the calorie in and calorie out methodology to determine meal plan.

vHelpful websites for this step: http://nutritiondata.self.com/tools/calories-burned; http://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-diet-nutrition-apps,review-2308.html; www.myfitnesspal.com; www.calorieking.com; www.supertracker.usda.gov; www.fitday.com;www.acsm.org)

vMinimum 1 page of information and background content on client required.

vMinimum 1 page on client’s goals required. Immediate goals, 4 week, 6 week, 6 month. Explain and give specific goals they wish to reach.

vSuccessful meal planning requires detail and base content to develop a successful plan.

STEP 2

What does your meal plan include?

vYou must describe in detail what the client’s dietary needs are.

vMinimum nutrients to cover are carbs, protein, fat, fiber, and sodium

vDoes this client need any additional supplementation? If so what kind and why?

vMinimum 1 page of explanation.

vYou must then provide a detailed meal plan for 7-days.

vThis plan can be in any chart format that is easy to read and understand for your client.

vEach day must have caloric breakdowns of each meal and for the entire day. Again you must cover at least these nutrients: carbs, protein, fat, fiber, and sodium.

vMinimum 2 pages of content with details of each meal and day.
