Addiction

Introduction:

Addiction is a malfunction of the natural processes the brain uses to seek out things that promote success and survival. Therefore, to understand addiction, you must first understand how the brain works. In this module you will learn more about how addictive drugs hijack the brain’s natural reward pathway, how addiction leads to physical changes in the brain structure, and the role of genes and environment in one’s addiction risk.

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

– Describe neurotransmission and the natural reward pathway of the brain

– Explain how addictive agents can interfere with normal brain function and how use of these agents can cause changes to brain structure

– Identify the genetic and environmental risk factors for addiction

– Recognize how research on addiction is conducted
